Real Madrid – Steaua Bucuresti 1-0: What a match!
Topic: Sport (Nov 2, 2006)
15,000 Romanians watched live how Steaua made one of its best appearances in a game doomed to failure.
Surprisingly, Romanians had a game almost as good as the “half billion clubâ€, with three huge occasions wasted during the first half, even though it lacked five injured players.
“This evening Real Madrid wasn’t allowed to play the way they did in Bucharest,” Steaua coach Cosmin Olaroiu said. “We played with great courage and almost got a result at the Santiago Bernabeu. Had we taken our chances in the first half, we would have had more space in the second half to play our game.”
The victory goal was in fact scored by one of the Romanian players, Banel Nicolita, after an incredible mistake 20 minutes before the end of the game. FC Steaua Bucuresti coach Cosmin Olaroiu said his players had rallied round their luckless team-mate, despite his mistake ending their qualification hopes.
“I think they gave us a gift with the goal, we had five incredible chances to score goals. It was a balanced game.”, Madrid coach Fabio Capello said.
